Turkey has 40% of entire world’s marble potential with its 5, 2 milliard m³ total reserve. However, Only 1% of this reserve has been used. Marble production of Turkey has been increasing since 1980. Turkey is on the 7th grade with its marble production and on the 8th grade with marble exportation. Turkey, with its rich marble reserves, advantageous and strategic location, will rise in world’s grading about the exportation of marble. International marble product fairs have a great importance so as to introduce our marbles abroad, to be a world known brand and to rise in world’s marble grading. ANATOLIA STONE '07 Anatolian Natural Stone, Marble and Technologies Fair has been organized for this reason, 28 November - 01 December 2007, Antalya Expo Center, Antalya, Turkey.

The 13th MARBLE-International Natural Stone and Technologies Fair expects the participation of 1,038 firms -- 251 foreign and 787 local companies.

The fair, organized at the Izmir International Fair Center, will open its doors on March 28 and remain open until March 31.

The Marble fair has become a world brand, said Doğan İşleyen, Izmir Fairs, Culture and Art Activities Inc. (İZFAŞ) general manager.

“There is a growing interest in the fair and the indoor stands were reserved months ago and because of the demand five new prefabricated units were built,” he said.

“After the fair, the prefabricated units will be removed,” said İşleyen. He also indicated that the exhibition area, which was 38,000 square meters last year, has been expended to 40,000 square meters, consisting of 15,000 square meters open area and 25,000 square meters indoors.

Preparations for the fair, which is the second largest in its field, are almost completed, said İşleyen.

The number of foreign participants increased to 251 this year from last year's 238 and local participant numbers increased to 787 from 714, during the same period, said İşleyen. These types of initiatives help increase the number of foreign customers and visitors to the city throughout the year, he said.

The marble fair and natural stone sector has grown in parallel since 1995, said İşleyen, adding that Turkey's natural stone exports, which hit $77 million in 1995, exceeded $1 billion in 2006.

Natural stone export upwards $1 bln

Turkey has reached its natural stone export target of $1 billion set for 2008 at the end of 2006, said Arslan Erdinç, head of the Aegean Mine Exporters Union.

Turkey put its signature on $1.70 billion in natural stone and marble exports in 2006, said Erdinç during the Mining and Environment meeting held at the Marmaris Grand Azur hotel .

Natural stone exports reached $515.5 million in the Aegean region. That's about 53 percent of the country's total [natural stone] exports, said Erdinç, adding, We have a 29 percent annual increase.

The natural stone and marble sector is having a very hard time competing with its rivals. We are importing $29 billion worth of energy fuel. Some $16.5 billion of that is petroleum, $10 billion natural gas and the remaining in other various areas. We depend on those imports, said Erdinç.

The world is leaning toward nuclear energy. We need to take steps in that direction also, he said, adding, Turkey has great reserves of uranium. By using these sources the country could close its energy gap. We need to supply energy to our industrialists, to our exporters at global prices. Turkey needs to create alternative energy sources, he said, adding, We need to invest in locations receiving lots of wind in order to benefit from that alternative energy.

Turkish marble to be displayed at Marmomacc in Verona

Tons of Turkish marble taking off from Izmir's airport today are destined for the 41st Marmomacc, the International Exhibition of Marble, Stone and Technology, in Verona, Italy.

The exhibit will run from Oct. 4-7th.

Marmomacc, the world's meeting place for the marble and natural stone industry, will be held in a 70,000-square-foot area, with 1,500 firms from 50 countries expected to attend. Among these, 63 are Turkish.

“The marble and natural stone sector has a high export potential in our country,” stated Arslan Erdinç, head of the Aegean Exporters Union. In the U.S. marble market, goods of Turkish origin have the largest share, leaving Italian products far behind, said Erdinç. “Today a committee of 316 will travel to Verona. This is the only way to show our strength in this sector. By participating in this exhibit, we also want to learn more about developing technologies and trends in the world. We will also show the increasing potential of Turkish firms in the sector.”

The private plane, hired by the Aegean Exporters Union, will also transport governors from Izmir, Manisa, Aydın and Muğla, some members of Parliament and top bureaucrats along with tons of marble from Izmir to Verona.
